from Genealogy of the Mallorys of Virginia

Image
The Genealogy of the Mallorys of Virginia was written by Henry R. Mallory and published by The Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, 1955.  The author cites two sources at the beginning: the V irginia Magazine of History and Biography , 1905 - 1907, and "source records" compiled by the author, as well as a "questionnaire sent to living family members." The genealogical data in this text appear to be trustworthy, if somewhat obscured.  The following is an attempt to separate out the names, dates, places, etc. for a basic family tree.  To read the family histories, see the original (link above).   Christopher Mallory (The ancestors of Christopher and William will be continued in another installment). Sir William Mallory (brother of Christopher) of Studley Royal, Yorkshire, and Hutton Conyers, North Yorkshire, m. Ursula, daughter of George Gayle (or Gale), esq. of York, master of the Mint and sometime Lord Mayor.  Will proved 15 June 1586, York.  Buried a...

Anne Coyne

The Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Coyne, St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, Virginia, written 4 Feb 1750, names her four daughters: Elizabeth (Coyne) Rogers, Frances (Coyne) Pain (?), Jane (Coyne) Hensley, and Ann (Coyne) Mallory.  It also mentions her son-in-law John Mallory, executor of the will. Elizabeth Coyne is apparently a widow and her husband is not named, neither is her maiden name given.  According to various individuals, Anne Coyne's father, husband of Elizabeth, was Edward Coyne (Coin).  The WeRelate.Org website for Edward quotes his will, which leaves everything to wife, Elizabeth.  The Library of Virginia website indexes the will, but there does not appear to be a digital copy to view.  The will was written 22 July 1748, "being very sick and weak," and proved a month later, 25 August 1748. Without a maiden name for Elizabeth or marriage record for her and Edward, it is not a terribly strong case for the connection to Edward beyond ...

Mallory Migrations after 1860

Image
Sarah Mallory, second daughter of John and Eliza, married Simeon Dildy before 1859.  Their daughter, Matilda, was born in Dade County, Missouri in 1859, and they appeared in the 1860 Census in Polk, Dade County.   John and Eliza Mallory and the rest of their children* also appeared in the 1860 Census in Polk, Dade County, as did John's brother, William Perkin Mallory with his wife and kids.   In 1862, John and his son, William F. Mallory, joined the Confederate Army. In 1863, Perk was drafted into the Union Army.   Sometime before 1865, Eliza Mallory took her children from Dade County (upper center on map) to Grayson County, Texas (bottom left on map), traveling on foot, by night, to avoid the bushwhackers.  This journey was about 350 miles, through the Indian Territories (now Oklahoma). Simeon and Sarah (Mallory) Dildy went south into Arkansas, possibly near Little Rock, Pulasky County (right, 1/3 from the bottom). John J. William Dildy was born in Arkansas in ...

Amanda "Mandy" Lucy Mallory

Amanda "Mandy" Lucy Mallory  The daughter of John and Eliza (Hackney) Mallory, Mandy was born [in Missouri], on 10 Dec 1849, according to her headstone .  The 1850 Census places the family in Dade County, Missouri.  She was the fifth of eight children, and would have been about thirteen years old when she accompanied her mother and younger brothers on the perilous trek from Missouri to Texas during the Civil War (see June Ferguson history).   John Mallory died in Texas in 1869.  That same year, at the age of 19, Mandy married John Rickman Miller, 27 May 1869.  (In the certificate below, notice that the county clerk is reusing forms from another county and has crossed out those names and written in Grayson for the county and Sherman for the county seat.)                             John Rickman Miller   The 1870 Grayson County Texas Census shows John and Mandy (Mallory) Mi...
