from Genealogy of the Mallorys of Virginia

The Genealogy of the Mallorys of Virginia was written by Henry R. Mallory and published by The Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, 1955.  The author cites two sources at the beginning: the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 1905 - 1907, and "source records" compiled by the author, as well as a "questionnaire sent to living family members."

The genealogical data in this text appear to be trustworthy, if somewhat obscured.  The following is an attempt to separate out the names, dates, places, etc. for a basic family tree.  To read the family histories, see the original (link above).
 
Christopher Mallory (The ancestors of Christopher and William will be continued in another installment).



Sir William Mallory (brother of Christopher) of Studley Royal, Yorkshire, and Hutton Conyers, North Yorkshire, m. Ursula, daughter of George Gayle (or Gale), esq. of York, master of the Mint and sometime Lord Mayor.  Will proved 15 June 1586, York.  Buried at Ripon, North Yorkshire, England, 22 March 1602/3

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
John (son and heir of William) m. Anne, daughter of William, Lord Eure, of Witton Castle, Durham, and Margaret, daughter of Sir Edward Dymoke, of Skrivelsby, knight. 
 
William (son and heir of John, grandson of William), baptized 1 Sept 1580.  Married Alice, daughter of Sir James Bellingham, of Over Levens, and Agnes, daughter of Sir Henry Curwen, of Workington.  Buried in Ripon Minster, 4 March 1645/6.

Sir John Mallory (third son and heir of William, grandson of John, great grandson of William) m. Mary, daughter of John Moseley, esq. of York.  Loyalist who took an active part in the Civil War: "As governor of Skipton Castle he held that fortress for three years" (p. 10).  Died at Studley, and was buried at Ripon Minster, 24 Jan 1655/6.

William (only son of Sir John), died unmarried in 1666.

Mary (dau of Sir John), born 1640, married Sir George Aislabie, of York.  Sir George died in a duel in 1674.
 
Christopher (son of John, grandson of William) described himself as "of Ripon" but resided in Flanders for twenty-two years.  He returned to England "for his health" and was arrested in August of 1628 and detained in prison.  He was Roman Catholic.

Edward (son of John, grandson of William) baptized 10 June 1596.
 
Christopher (son of William), murdered on the highway while returning home from Ireland, buried in Ripon, 2 July 1598.
 
George (son of William), married in Ripon 19 Oct 1603 to Frances Dawson.  Lived in Hollin Close [South Yorkshire?] and was "intered in the minster...neere the place on the south side where my ancestors have beene usually buried" (p. 8), 7 July 1615.  His Will was written 8 June 1615 and mentions his wife, Frances, and nephew, William.

Robert (son of William), became "papist beyond ye seas" (p. 9).   A letter was written by his father to a friend, asking for help: "...seeing he haythe forgotten his dewtye to Gode, that he may taike that course, which may prove an utter undoing to himselfe, and a great discomfort to me his father...yf anye means might be maid to staye him for the passage into daungers..." (p. 8).

Elizabeth (youngest daughter of William), baptized 1 Oct 1573/4.  Married John Legard, of Ganton, North Yorkshire, esq..  Died 21 June 1627.

Rev. Thomas Mallory (4th son of William), born about 1566.  Dean of Chester, m. Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Vaughan, Bishop of Chester.  Died 3 Apr 1644 at the deanery house in Chester.

Richard (eldest son of Thomas "the Dean") of Mobberley, Cheshire, England.  "The estate of Mobberley descended in his family" (p. 11).

William (son of Thomas "the Dean"), baptized 4 Aug 1606 at Davenham, Cheshire, England.  A Captain in the army of Charles I, he was knighted 1 Feb 1642/3.  He wasa killed or died in service, and died without issue.


Rev. Thomas Mallory (son of Thomas "the Dean"), baptized 27 Aug 1605 at Davenham, Cheshire, England, became Rector of Eccleston, Lancaster County, England, and was a Loyalist.  First married Jane (d. 12 Feb 1638/9, Northenden) then m. 2nd Mary, and 3rd Frances, who is mentioned in his will.  Died at Brindle, near his Rectory of Eccleston, and buried 8 Sept 1671.  Will dated 10 July 1671, proved 21 Nov 1671.

"Captain" Roger Mallory, gentleman, (son of Thomas, grandson of "the Dean")received a grant of land in New Kent County, Virginia, 1660.

William (son of Roger) m. Ann Wythe, daughter of Thomas Wythe, gentleman and Justice of Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He settled in Elizabeth City County as early as 1680.  His Will is dated 17 Aug 1719 and proved 15 Feb 1720.

Francis (son of William, grandson of Roger) m. Ann Myhill (1st married Edward Myhill).  He m. 2nd ---- Johnson.  Will dated 7 Jan 1742, proved 18 July 1744.

Johnson (son of Francis, grandson of William, gg of Roger) m. Diana [King].  Will dated 9 May 1760, proved 5 May 1762.

Philip (son of Thomas "the Dean"), born 1617.  Baptized 29 April 1618.  Married Catherine, daughter of Robert Batte, Vice-Master of University College, Oxford.  Loyalist. Emigrated to Virginia before 1656, where he was appointed by the colony to represent their "church affaires" in England.  He officiated at the "celebration of the restoration of Charles II" in September 1660 (p.60). Will dated 23 July 1661, proved 27 July 1661, gave "To nephew Roger Mallory all Plantations in Virginia" (p.59) and mentions "mother Mrs. Elizabeth Mallory".

Jane (dau of Thomas "the Dean") m. John Halford (or Hawford or Holford) of Davenham.

Thomas Halford or Holford (son of John and Jane) went to Virginia c. 1668.
 
Katherine or Martha (dau of Thomas "the Dean") m. John Batte of Okewell, Yorkshire.  He emigrated to Virginia.
 
Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas "the Dean"), Baptized 6 Jan 1608 at Davenham, Cheshire, and m. 13 Sept 1642 at Mobberley, Rev. Thomas Glover, Rector of West Kirkley or West Kirby.

Mary (dau of Thomas "the Dean") m. Edward Wirley, youngest son of Humphrey Wyrley of Hampshire Hall, Staffordshire, and rector of Mobberley after the Dean's death.
