Dorothy Amanda Mallory in the 1930s

In the 1930 Census, Dorothy Amanda Mallory was recorded as 23 years of age (although she was actually 25), and residing at 117 South F street in Imperial, California.  She worked as a bookkeeper in a grocery store.  (Her occupation as bookkeeper is also given in the California Voter Registrations from 1928-1932.)
 
"Dottie" Mallory appeared quite often in the local Imperial Valley Press of El Centro, California, usually in the society piece called "Imperial Readers' Column," by Evelyn Hicks [see photo below].  The following is a sampling of those mentions.

Saturday, May 16, 1931, page three, "Miss Dottie Mallory returned Tuesday from a visit with her sister and friends in Los Angeles and Glendale.  While in Los Angeles she attended the Florence Nightengale [sic] service given in honor of the nurses of the city at the St. Paul Cathedral.  She states that it was a beautiful service and approximately a thousand nurses attended this service."


Friday, August 26, 1932, page three, "Miss Dottie Mallory entertained with a beautifully appointed dinner Friday evening at her home on North F street.  Those present were: Misses Alma Dow, Louise Thompson, Lucy Mallory, and Duke Neilson, Harry Simpson, Harvey Allen, Bob Hurley and the hostess."

Friday, July 21, 1933, page two, "Mr. and Mrs. Victor Cline motored to San Diego Sunday to meet Mrs. Cline's mother, Mrs. J. W. Poor, who has been spending the summer with her son, Pinkney Poor [m. 1932, Leona Lucie Mallory, photo right].  Miss Dottie Mallory is spending a few days with Miss Anna Belford of San Diego and is then motoring to spend the rest of her vacation with her sister, Mrs. Pinkney Poor, of Los Angeles."

Friday, August 4, 1933, page three, "Mrs. Crystal Cline [Crystal Poor, Pinkney's sister, m. 1923, Victor Cline] was overcome by heat Saturday morning.  She was removed to her home and later taken to the Laguna mountains.  She is reported to be recovering rapidly.  [Crystal died of heart problems related to the heat on Aug. 13, 1933.]  
Dottie Mallory has returned from a two weeks' vacation spent in Los Angeles, visiting her sister, Mrs. Pinkney Poor.  Era Mae Oliver, who accompanied her, remained another week to visit the Lindsley family at Chula Vista.  Reverend Lindsley was pastor of the Community church in Imperial for a number of years."

Friday, December 29, 1933, page four, "Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Poor and son Pinckney and Victor Cline spent the holidays in San Diego.  Miss Era Mae Oliver of San Deigo who is spending the holidays with her parents, was the guest of Miss

Saturday, March 3, 1934, page one, "Death Claims Imperial Man".
 
Benjamin Franklin Mallory, 78, for the past two years a rancher at Imperial, died this morning.  He was born in Missouri, April 4, 1885 [sic], and is survived by his wife, one son, Owen, of Imperial and two daughters, Dottie Mallory of Imperial and Lucie Poor of Los Angeles.


Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the funeral parlors of B. E. Lemons, with Rev. Howlett and Rev. Fravel of Imperial officiating.  Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery.

Saturday, April 21, 1934, page eight, “A Christian Endeavor* cabinet meeting was held at the home of Dottie Mallory Monday evening.  After the business discussion delicious refreshments were served.  Those attending were: Earl Templeton, Alfred Swenny, Ina O’Neal, Earl Atnip, Paul Cosand and Marjorie Miller.

“Robert Hurley of El Centro entertained with a pot-luck dinner Thursday evening at his home.  The guests attending from Imperial were: Miss Dottie Mallory, Mrs. B. F. Mallory, Ina O’Neal and Alfred Sweeny.

“A Christian Endeavor rally will be held at the Christian church Friday evening, in El Centro.  Those planning to attend from the Imperial branch are: Miss Dottie Mallory, Earl Templeton, Miss Ina O’Neal, Reverend and Mrs. H. Atnip.”

Tuesday, June 5, 1934, page five, "Miss Dottie Mallory and her mother went to Live Oaks Sunday where they spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Pinkney Poor who are visiting at the J. W. Poor [Pinkney's father]cabin in Live Oaks."

Wednesday, June 27, 1934, page four, "Miss Dottie Mallory motored to Los Angeles Sunday on a two weeks vacation.  While there Miss Mallory plans to attend a Christian Endeavor camp for new ideas, etc."

(Dot attended a number of parties over the course of the year and into the next.)

Friday, April 5, 1935, page six, "Mr. and Mrs. Pinkney Poor and son of Los Angeles spent the weekend in Imperial visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Poor

"Miss Dottie Mallory and mother, Mrs. [B.] F. Mallory, left Imperial Tuesday morning for Oregon where they will visit relatives and friends and then motor on to Massachusetts to visit relatives.  Miss Mallory has been an employee in Lincoln's grocery for the past seven years.  Mrs. Grace Gray will take her place.

"Mrs. C. Oliver was hostess, Wednesday to the Cheerful Charity club.  Those present were Mrs. Martha Poor [Pinkney's mother], Mrs. Dorothy Luallin, Mrs. Mattie Ingram, Mrs. A. A. Spear and the hostess."


Dot is next mentioned in the La Grande Evening Observer, La Grande, Oregon, on Friday, July 28, 1939, page two, "News Briefs": "Travel East -- Iris and Loree Lyon left Wednesday by bus to visit with Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Brewer and Dottie Mallory at Providence, R. I., and New Bedford, Conn. [sic]  They will return by car around September 1."

The 1940 Census lists Dorothy Mallory, age 34, as a resident of New Bedford, Mass.  She was Secretary at the Sassaquin [Lakeville State] Sanitarium [where tuberculosis was treated and her brother-in-law, husband of Lila, James F. Brewer, worked as a doctor].
